Construction Issues Delay School Start at Two SSD Schools

Due to weather-related construction delays, the first day back for students at two SSD schools has been postponed by two weeks. The first day of school for students at Ackerman School and Northview High School will be Monday, Aug. 31.

Work was set to be completed this month, but inclement weather has caused delays in outdoor work that needs to be completed before the schools can open. Such work includes a perimeter road around Northview, curbs, sidewalks, ramps, paving and a retaining wall.

Construction work at both sites, which are located in Florissant, began in June 2014. Extensive renovations at Ackerman School, 1550 Derhake Road, include a new entryway with administrative offices, an addition for classrooms and a gym.

Last year, construction began on a new Northview High School, 1520 Derhake Road, on property adjacent to the original school. The old school was demolished in May, and that area will be the new parking lot.
The construction schedule set by ICS Construction Company, who is doing the work, includes 56 days for weather-related issues, but about 80 days have been used to date due to the exceptional amount of rain this year. As weather permits, crews have been working longer hours seven days a week on the projects.

To make up the missed days, the school calendar for the Ackerman and Northview High students has been adjusted to include adding two attendance days during the school year and extending the school year by four days. All other SSD schools will follow the original 2015-16 calendar. Click here to view the full SSD school calendar for 2015-16.
