South Tech students heat up competition at regional welding contest
Five students compete and all five take home top prizes

More than 100 of the best high school welders from a three-state area recently competed in the Missouri Welding Institute's Second Annual High School Welding Competition.

Students are given a set of blue prints and have to assemble and weld according to given specifications under a tight time restraint. Students from Missouri, Kansas and Kentucky participated in the competition, with prizes awarded for first through tenth places.

Five South Technical High School students represented St. Louis, and all five placed within the top 10.

Sidney McManus took first place and a full scholarship (value of $11,900), a Lincoln generator welder (Value of $2,200), an additional $500 scholarship and a trophy.

Justin Rush took second place, receiving a half-tuition scholarship (value of $5,950), a Victor Journeyman cutting torch outfit (Value of $400), a trophy and an additional $500 scholarship.

Brendan Hobbs placed fifth overall, receiving a trophy, new welding helmet and a $500 scholarship.

Tyler Achilles and Tony Weathers placed sixth and seventh, respectfully, both receiving a $500 scholarship and a trophy.

Special School District's Career and Technical Education Division operates two technical high schools with more than 30 programs in a wide range of technical areas. Technical course offerings range from traditional technical fields, such as precision machining and construction, to such burgeoning fields as network administration and health sciences. Programs at the two schools accept applications from all 10th- through 12th-grade students from the 22 public school districts in St. Louis County. South Technical High School opened in 1967, and now serves roughly 1,000 students from around St. Louis County. For more information, visit
