Careers

Because it’s not just a job.

For more than 50 years, people have been choosing careers at SSD for reasons far beyond a paycheck. Its employees all share a simple mission: helping young people succeed.

Hailed as “one of the great success stories in public education in the St. Louis region” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, SSD has become an icon for special education and technical education.

Because of the specific nature of the district’s work in special education and technical education, SSD employs a broader range of staff than many conventional districts. The vast array of career opportunities at SSD has resulted in thousands of educators and those in related fields finding jobs for which they are uniquely qualified.

SSD's online application process

SSD strictly adheres to an online application process. If you are interested in applying for employment, you must complete the online application. Your application will be retained in active status for one school year. If your qualifications meet our needs, we will contact you for further information and a possible interview. You will only be able to apply for positions that are currently available and posted on the district’s electronic job board. If you do not see a position of interest, please continue to monitor this website. Once the position is posted, you will be able to complete an online application.

Due to the volume of applicants, we regret that we are unable to respond to inquiries regarding your online application or to discuss available positions.

[+] Investment in employees/benefits
Ask SSD employees about the benefits of working for the district, and you’re likely to hear about their incredible students or the support they receive from dedicated coworkers. And while these are, indeed, central to the district’s appeal, there remain dozens of other tangible benefits to a career with SSD. From its competitive salaries to its wide range of staff development opportunities, Special School District offers educators not just a job, but a vibrant, dynamic career.

Salaries and insurance
SSD offers competitive salaries and comprehensive insurance benefits to its full-time staff.

The district offers an open access medical plan for staff. This health insurance coverage is paid for by the district and provides employees with a wide range of choices in physicians, hospitals and pharmacies. SSD also provides dental, vision and life insurance for staff at no cost to the employee.

Holidays and leave
SSD is also competitive in the areas of holidays, sick and bereavement leave and sabbatical leave. In the latter category, SSD offers up to a year of sabbatical leave at 50 percent of an employee’s salary after seven years of continuous service, based on supervisor approval. In addition, SSD offers up to one year unpaid leave for education and childrearing purposes after one year of employment.

Retirement plan
All full-time employees of the district are enrolled in a state public school retirement plan through which the employee and the district contribute matching amounts. Employees are fully vested in the plan after five years of continuous service. Additionally, staff can make contributions to several tax-deferred savings plans.

Staff development opportunities
The district has worked hard to establish lasting partnerships with area colleges and universities. These partnerships bear fruit through program offerings and workshops tailored to meet the needs of SSD staff.

Additionally, SSD offers hundreds of opportunities annually for training and learning through in-house workshops, lectures and staff development activities.
Important Notes
  • Applicants must have a current e-mail address in order to complete the district’s online application.
  • Applicants should check their e-mail regularly as SSD primarily communicates through email.
  • Applicants must have the e-mail addresses of two past or current supervisors in order to participate in the district’s electronic reference system.
  • Individuals applying for support staff positions that require at least 60 college credit hours must submit original college transcripts. Substitute teacher applicants must also follow this guideline. This is a requirement of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, so interviews for applicable positions will not be scheduled without original transcripts.
  • Individuals applying for teacher, administrative and student support services positions, with the exception of substitutes, may still submit copies of college transcripts to have a complete application. Original transcripts will be required at a later stage in the application process.
  • All applicants must complete the online StyleProfile that was e-mailed to them.
  • HR will not schedule applicants for interviews without two complete electronic references, a complete StyleProfile and transcripts, if applicable.

Transcripts should be sent to the SSD Human Resources Department at:
