Orthopedic Impairment
What is orthopedic impairment?
Orthopedic impairment means a severe impairment with bones, joints and/or muscles that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. The term includes impairments caused by congenital anomaly (such as club foot or the absence of some member); impairments caused by disease (such as poliomyelitis or bone tuberculosis); and impairments from other causes (including cerebral palsy, amputations and fractures or burns that cause contrachures).

Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education – Criteria for Eligibility in the Educational Category of Orthopedic Impairment

A child is determined to have orthopedic impairment when:
  1. An orthopedic impairment has been diagnosed by a licensed physician
  2. The physical impairment adversely affects the child’s educational performance
