John C. CaryJohn C. Cary, Superintendent of Schools

Mr. John C. Cary was appointed superintendent of schools for SSD in July 2007.

Mr. Cary began his career in education teaching work skills to and coordinating job placements for students with moderate to severe disabilities. He served as a secondary principal and as superintendent in two small Missouri school districts before joining Mehlville School District in St. Louis County in 1986 as the Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs.

Three years later, Mr. Cary was named Chief Financial Officer and Associate Superintendent of the district, and then served as Mehlville superintendent from 1996 to 2003. From 2003 to 2007, Mr. Cary held the position of vice president at Banc of America Securities LLC where a portion of his duties included advising school districts on bond issues.

Mr. Cary holds an educational specialist degree in educational administration. He also has a master’s degree in secondary school leadership and a bachelor’s degree in education.

[+] Chris Baldwin, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer
Chris Baldwin was appointed chief technology officer in January 2011. He began his career at SSD in 2007 as administrator for program evaluation and new initiatives before serving as interim chief technology officer. Prior to joining SSD, Baldwin worked as a school psychologist, special education process coordinator, program evaluator, and director of research, technology and management information systems.

Baldwin holds a doctorate of philosophy degree in school psychology, a master’s degree in clinical psychology, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

[+] Don Bohannon, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources
Don Bohannon was appointed assistant superintendent for human resources in January 2004. He began his career at SSD in 1987 as an itinerant speech/language pathologist. In 1995, he became a member of the district’s administration and was appointed area coordinator. In 2000 he was promoted to region director for the district. Two years later he was again promoted to executive director of the district’s North region.

Bohannon received a bachelor’s degree in speech/language pathology in 1985. He received his master’s degree from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville.

Don Bohannon
[+] Richard Carver, CPA, Chief Financial Officer
Rich Carver has served as the chief financial officer for SSD since 1997. From August 1999 to March 2000 he also served as interim superintendent of the district.

Prior to joining SSD, Carver spent more than 20 years at Boatman’s Bancshares Inc., serving in a number of capacities. During his final eight years with the organization, he was senior vice president and treasurer.

Carver is a member of the American Institute of CPAs. He received his bachelor’s degree from Saint Louis University.

Rich Carver
[+] Mike Hodge, J.D., General Counsel
Michael D. Hodge was appointed general counsel in April 2011. Mike began his career as a special educator in the Fort Zumwalt School District before becoming an attorney. After graduating from the Saint Louis University School of Law, Mike represented public school districts throughout Missouri focusing his practice primarily in employment, general education and special education law. Prior to joining SSD, Hodge also worked for Vatterott College as senior associate counsel/ administrator of student affairs before being promoted to vice president of operations.

Hodge earned a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Missouri – Columbia and a juris doctor from SLU Law School.

Mike Hodge
[+] Nancy Ide, Chief Communications Officer
In September 2002, Nancy Ide was appointed as the chief communications officer for SSD after having first served as director of communications and communications manager for the district.

Prior to joining the staff of Special School District in 1999, Ide spent more than eight years as a copy editor and staff writer at Suburban Journals newspapers.

Ide has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Maryville University and an associate’s degree in journalism from St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley.

Nancy Ide
[+] Lynne Midyett, Assistant Superintendent for Partner Districts
Lynne Midyett was appointed assistant superintendent for special education in 2009. She began her career at SSD in 1974 as a special education teacher. After working out of state in education for several years, Midyett returned to SSD as an assistant principal in 1994. She served as an area coordinator and director for the district from 1997 until 2009, until again being promoted to her current position.

Midyett has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri - Columbia and a master's degree in special education from Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville.

Lynne Midyett
[+] Mike Rogg, Director of Technical Education
Mike Rogg was appointed director of technical education in June 2010. Prior to joining the staff of SSD, Rogg served as vice president for trade and technical education at Highland Community College in Kansas. Rogg has worked in various positions within the field of career and technical education for more than 20 years.

Rogg holds master’s degrees in both education administration and technical education and received a bachelor’s degree in vocational technical education from Pittsburg State University.

Mike Rogg
[+] Mary Ann Tietjens, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent for Planning and Development
Mary Ann Tietjens was appointed assistant superintendent in June 2006. She has three decades of experience in education and has been with SSD since 1976. After first serving the district as a language development classroom teacher, Tietjens became a speech/language diagnostician. In 1980, she was appointed to the district’s administration, serving as an area coordinator, director of early childhood special education and executive director of the district’s South region.

Tietjens holds a doctorate in education, and both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in communication disorders from Saint Louis University.

Mary Ann Tietjens
[+] Joan Zavitsky, Ph.D., Associate Superintendent
Joan Zavitsky was appointed associate superintendent in July 2002. Zavitsky has been with the district since 1986 and has held a variety of positions within the organization including assistant principal, administrator and director of curriculum and staff development. From July 1999 to July 2002, she served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and staff development. She began working in general education in 1974 before moving into special education in 1977. She has held a variety of teaching and administrative positions in the field.

She holds a doctor of philosophy degree in curriculum and instruction; a master’s of social work degree in administration; a master’s of education degree with a concentration in special education and behavior disorders; and a bachelor’s of arts degree in elementary education.
