Create a Bully-Free World:
October is National Bullying Prevention Month

More than one out of every five students reports being bullied at some point, according to the National Bullying Prevention Center. And for more than a decade, October has been designated National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month.

The goal at SSD is to prevent bullying from occurring. Along with an anti-bullying policy, several SSD schools take part in character education programs, which address bullying head on.

“Character education is important because it helps remind students and staff of the importance of doing the right thing, and being nice and respectful to everyone,” said Kyla Sewell, a teacher at SSD’s Neuwoehner High School. “We launched a kindness campaign at Neuwoehner this school year and have identified great ways to show good character and ensure that we, as a school community, include everyone and respect each other no matter what. We include some of the fun activities planned to bring attention to an important topic—bullying prevention.”

For outside of school walls, there are resources for parents and students to use if bullying does occur, and information on how to prevent bullying from ever starting:

  • The Missouri NEA (National Education Association) has a No “MO”re Bullying program that has been used to train thousands of educators since 2004.
