Student Gains Confidence with
Project Achieve and SSD Supports

In addition to multiple transition opportunities offered by SSD, other programs help students hone in on their talents and goals for their future.

Kirkwood School District offers Project Achieve – a program that focuses on students’ academic, social, emotional and behavioral progress and success.

According to Carol Doelling, mother of Catherine Doelling, a senior who receives SSD services at Kirkwood High School and also attends South Technical High School, Project Achieve has helped her daughter build personal confidence and is helping her determine the next steps in her life.

“Project Achieve has been supporting Catherine’s interests and monitoring her progress,” says Doelling. “She has gone through the transition planning process and has more to do this year.”

At South Tech, Catherine is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program and recently won the gold medal at the Missouri State Leadership Convention in Columbia, Mo.

She is also a member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), a national student leadership organization for youth engaged in Family and Consumer Science classes.

“She would not have the confidence she has if she had not been placed in Project Achieve and if she wasn’t going to South Tech,” Doelling says. “We have been able to see her abilities in a whole new way.”

Doelling says while her daughter is interested in continuing in early childhood education, she is also considering other possibilities.

She credits SSD staff, the Project Achieve program and South Tech with helping her daughter get a clearer picture of paths for her future. “These programs have been a great thing for her,” Doelling says.
