Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to a new year at Ackerman School! My name is Kelly Grigsby—I am the principal and Lisa Leonard-Sneed is the assistant principal. We are excited to welcome students back and to begin the 2016-2017 school year! Our 5th Annual Meet the Teacher Night is scheduled for August 4th from 4:00pm – 6:00pm. This event provides an opportunity for students and families to meet with teachers and drop off supplies prior to the first day of school! We hope to see you all here!
The first day of school is August 9th. Transportation will contact you with bus information prior to the first day of school. Our goal is 100% student attendance on the first day—please help us reach our goal! As a district, we are moving to online registration for families starting this school year. Online registration has many benefits – it’s faster, information can be updated at any time without a phone call, and it helpful for the environment. As we make this transition to online registration, we will need a current email address. Online registration can be completed on any mobile device or computer with internet access. If families do not have online access, paper forms will still be available. In this packet, you will find the following:
- Welcome letter from your child’s teacher
- Instructions on how sign up for online registration for this school year
- Two sets of forms:
- A packet of forms that are available through online registration – if you sign up for online registration, these forms can be completed online. If not, please complete and return the paper copy.
- A packet of forms that are not available online and must be returned to your child teacher at Meet the Teacher Night or the first day of school.
- A copy of our school calendar with events
We are anxiously awaiting the results of our performance on the state assessments last spring. We are confident that our scores will support our devotion to improving student performance! We continue to work to improve student attendance – our goal is for all students to attend school every day. The State’s expectations for attendance require 90% of our students to attend at least 90% of the time. This year, our school-wide attendance was increased from 92.6% to 92.9%. Unfortunately, we still continue to struggle to meet the state expectation of 90% over 90% - only 78.2% of our students met this goal. While we didn’t meet the state expectation for the number of students over 90%, we continue to work to achieve this goal. Thank you for committing to send your students to school every day! Please help us continue to meet this goal by sending your child to school every day and working to schedule appointments at the beginning/end of the school day or on days when there is no school.
This summer seems to be the last of our major construction – we should have an entrance and good signage before school starts! Last year was a difficult one with managing a late school start, along with continued construction both at our school and at the high school on our campus. It has been well worth the wait and inconvenience. As the summer progresses, we will continue to improve the landscaping and continue with our regularly scheduled capital improvements, including a couple of classroom remodels, painted restrooms, and new fencing for our east playground. We are very proud of our school and are thrilled to have your family as members of our school family!
Last year, we experienced great successes with the continuation of our student programs. For our end-of-the-year picnic, we had representation from more than half of our families! In addition to school-wide events, many of you have attended classroom-specific events. During this school year, we will continue to identify ways to increase the levels of family engagement by improving the quality of the events we host - we welcome your input along the way! Our goals continue to focus on improving student achievement and attendance while building meaningful relationships with students in a safe, nurturing school environment. We are looking forward to a safe and productive school year! Thank you in advance for all of your support and dedication in helping your child meet his or her academic goals!
