SchoolsSSD provides special education services to students in a variety of placements, which are governed by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Services are based entirely on a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Located in Crestwood, Missouri, Southview educates students 5 to 21 years with a range of disabilities. Students attending Southview live in several nearby school districts: Affton, Bayless, Hancock Place, Lindbergh, Mehlville, portions of Parkway and Rockwood, Valley Park and Webster Groves with educational diagnoses of developmental disabilities, autism and emotional disturbance. Bridges is a short-term placement option for students ages 13 to 21 years with challenging social, emotional and behavioral issues. These students are placed at Bridges in order to provide a more structured environment where the staff is able to work intensively with small groups of students. The half-day program offers a morning or afternoon session for students. This means that the vast majority of special education services provided by SSD are delivered by SSD staff in 265 schools in 22 public school districts in St. Louis County.
Private/ParochialSSD teachers provide after-school special education services to students who attend private or parochial schools or who are home-schooled in St. Louis County. These services are provided through the district’s federally funded Special Non-Public Access Program (SNAP). SNAP services are provided at dozens of public school sites in St. Louis County. The after-school nature of the program allows students to receive special education and related services without having to leave their non-public schools in the middle of the day. Through the years, the district’s SNAP program has provided quality special education services to more than 15,000 private and parochial school students.
