  • SSD Students Attend Jayson Tatum Basketball Camp

    August 16, 2022 - The Jayson Tatum Foundation provided scholarships to Special Olympics Missouri, allowing eight SSD students to participate in the Jayson Tatum Basketball ProCamp free of charge over the summer. Tatum is a St. Louis native and NBA basketball player for the Boston Celtics. His camp was held on Aug. 4-5 at Chaminade College Preparatory School.

  • School Meals for 2022-23

    August 12, 2022 - Over the last two years, SSD and school districts across the country were able to provide free meals to students due to the USDA waivers associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, those waivers expired at the end of the 2021-22 school year. This means SSD will be returning to a paid meal service under USDA’s National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Meals will be charged according to a student’s free, reduced, or paid meal eligibility status during the 2022-23 school year.

  • 2022-23 COVID-19 Safe Return to In-Person Learning Plan - Updated Masking and Mitigation Measures

    July 27, 2022 - With the increased availability of personal protective equipment (PPE), access to vaccinations and boosters for all students and staff, the removal of St. Louis County’s mask mandate, and the recent court ruling regarding health mandates and quarantines in Missouri schools, we are updating our health and safety practices. At the July 26 meeting, SSD’s Board of Education approved the 2022-23 COVID-19 Safe Return to In-Person Learning Plan, which changes masking to optional for all SSD schools, sites, programs, and buildings. Students, families, staff, and visitors are welcome to wear masks if they choose.

  • Board Brief - July 26, 2022

    July 27, 2022 - The Board Brief is a review of actions taken by the SSD Board of Education during the July 26, 2022 meeting. It is one more way SSD is working to be transparent and improve communication, helping keep our community informed. Agenda items are linked, where applicable, to the meeting items on BoardDocs.   • Department of Equity Hosts Retreat for School Equity Teams

    July 20, 2022 - Equity teams from across the District came together to connect, celebrate achievements, and create goals for the 2022-23 school year during a retreat, presented by the SSD Department of Equity in July.

  • Kline Announced as New Assistant Director of Compliance

    July 15, 2022 - During the July 12 Board of Education meeting, Sarah Kline was approved for the role of assistant director of compliance. This new role within Special School District (SSD) will assist in gathering supporting documentation for District responses to requests for mediation and due process hearings.

  • Austin Elected to Missouri Education Technology Leaders Board of Directors

    July 14, 2022 - Doug Austin, SSD’s chief technology officer, recently was elected to the Missouri Education Technology Leaders (METL) Board of Directors. As a member at large, he will be sharing his expertise on implementing technology used in SSD with other technology staff members in school districts across the state.

  • Hemme Selected as a 2022 Regional TOY Honoree

    July 7, 2022 - Congratulations to Erin Hemme, who has been selected as a 2022 Regional Teacher of the Year Honoree by EducationPlus and the St. Louis Regional Professional Development Center! She has been a teacher at the Ladue Early Childhood Center for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) for the past six years.

  • $3,000 Awarded to Ackerman Music Teacher

    July 5, 2022 - Ackerman Music Teacher Stephanie Jones has been awarded the Music Education Outreach Grant in the amount of $3,000 from Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies (SAI).

  • South Tech Web Team Earns Bronze at Nationals

    July 1, 2022 - Zach Hendrix of Mehlville High School and Alex Carron of Lindbergh High School, both rising seniors in Web & Computer Programming at South Tech, won bronze medals at this year's national SkillsUSA conference.

  • FACE Supports Family Engagement Across the District

    July 1, 2022 - Special School District is excited to announce the creation of the Family and Community Engagement program (FACE). FACE, a merging of Parent Education and Diversity Awareness (PEDA) and Family Engagement divisions, will be effective as of July 1, 2022.

  • SDNEA Awards 2022 Scholarships, Mini-Grants

    June 27, 2022 - Special District National Education Association (SDNEA) presented its annual round of scholarships to students and mini-grants to teachers in June 2022. Funding these projects has been part of the organization’s mission for many years and demonstrates its support of extraordinary teaching and learning among SSD’s population.
