Special School District’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) department is excited to offer a virtual Lunch & Learn series for SSD families and stakeholders. The series, which will involve community organizations sharing information about their work, will continue during the 2023-24 school year and take place from 11:30 AM-Noon.
Representatives from three community organizations and three SSD departments will participate in order to increase awareness about their agencies or programs and make connections with those in our SSD community who may benefit from their programs and services.
Each event is held virtually through YouTube Live. To access the video, please click on the organization's name in the list below. The videos will not be available to view until their scheduled date and time.

Easterseals PEERS stresses the importance of developing and maintaining friendships for individuals with autism. The benefits of healthy, meaningful friendships include:
- Buffering the impact of stressful life events
- Building self-esteem
- Increasing independence
- Reducing the incidence of depression and anxiety

Thursday, October 5, 2023 - The Megan Meier Foundation (11:30 AM - 12:30 PM)
Join Tina Meier, CEO of The Megan Meier Foundation, as she shares information about bullying and cyberbullying with families.
About The Megan Meier Foundation:
On October 16, 2006, Tina Meier's life took a devastating turn. Her 13-year-old daughter, Megan Taylor Meier, took her own life after being cyberbullied by an adult neighbor posting as an imaginary boy named "Josh Evans" on MySpace. In December 2007, Tina Meier founded the Megan Meier Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to support and inspire actions to end bullying, cyberbullying, and suicide. The Megan Meier Foundation has evolved into a global bullying, cyberbullying, and suicide prevention foundation serving over 585,500 people.

Wednesday, October 25, 2023 - Pathways to Independence
Pathways to Independence is a local non-profit supporting teens through navigating their transition years, with a focus on friendship and social skills. Pathways is geared toward more independent teens, often with a Level 1 Autism diagnosis, a learning disability, or other developmental disability. Through a monthly calendar, participants have their choice of a variety of social activities and social skills classes.

Wednesday, November 15, 2023 - Starkloff Disability Institute
Starkloff Disability Institute builds inclusion where we live, learn, work, and play through disability-led programs that advance economic opportunity and transform lives. Starkloff Disability Institute programs address internalized ableism and teach career skills to ensure that disabled youth and adults have the tools to overcome bias and break into competitive careers. Dream Big program focuses on career exploration, pushing students to think beyond a narrow list of options and truly expand their vision for what their future could hold. Access U is the natural next step after Dream Big. Where Dream Big focuses on transition-aged youth, Access U supports college, trade, and tech school students as they develop professional skills and successfully launch their careers

Wednesday, February 28, 2024 - Hulme Resources' Alternatives to Guardianship Project
The Alternatives to Guardianship Project helps people with developmental disabilities avoid or terminate unnecessary guardianships by using safe and legal alternatives. It encourages and assists parents, educators, judges, lawyers, physicians, and other professionals to implement such alternatives whenever feasible. It promotes the adoption of public policies and systemic changes to protect the rights of people with developmental disabilities, ensuring equal rights and access to justice. These activities are accomplished through research, education, counseling, and advocacy.

Wednesday, February 28, 2024 - St. Louis Arc's Next
St. Lous Arc's Next transition program provides focused, impactful supports for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they prepare for their future. Next provides various programs which support individuals navigate what is next in their lives. The support offered in Next is centered on what is needed by the individual. Through skill building, goal development, and social activities, young adults are able to identify and work toward their goals. From an extra nudge in the right direction to classes that teach living skills, we will help you identify what’s Next.
