Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a One-to-One Device?
For the purposes of full-day students attending North Technical High School, a One-to-One Device is an HP touchscreen Chromebook, assigned to each full-day student. The program is designed for each individual student to use an individual device, not a shared device.
-
What kind of software does a One-to-One Device run?
“One-to-One Devices run millions of web-based applications, or web apps, that open right in the browser. You can access web apps by typing their URL into the address bar or by installing them instantly from the Chrome Web Store.” (“Google”)
-
When will my student receive their device?
During the first week of school, students will receive an HP One-to-One Device, a protective case, and a charger. Students and parents will be asked to sign an agreement prior to receiving their device that acknowledges that maintaining possession of the device and keeping it in good working order is the responsibility of the student.
-
Will students have access to the devices beyond the school day?
Yes. Another benefit of the program is that learning can continue beyond the school day with the One-to-One Device. Students will bring the device home each day throughout the school year. The devices will be collected in the summer.
-
Are students required to have their One-to-One Device at school each day?
Yes. Each student is required to bring the assigned One-to-One Device to school each day as the devices are fundamental learning tools for the types of instructional experiences offered at North Tech High School. Students need to charge their device overnight so that it is fully charged at the beginning of the school day.
-
Who should we see, call, or e-mail if there is a problem with the One-to-One Device?
There will be a repair and solution center in the Technology Office to serve students throughout the school day. Parents or students can also get assistance via e-mail at SSDSupport@ssdmo.org or by calling 314.989.8686.
-
Can my student use their One-to-One Device at home if we don’t have access to the internet?
The One-to-One Device is heavily dependent on an internet connection, but there are word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation options that will work in offline situations as well. Additionally, a limited number of wireless hotspot devices are available for checkout in the media center, as available.
-
Can the One-to-One Device be used anywhere?
Yes, as long as there is a WiFi signal to access the internet.
-
How long does the battery last?
The normal life of the battery of the HP One-to-One Device is 9-11 hours. If a student brings a fully charged computer to school, it should last the entire day. There will be opportunities and options for charging at school if necessary.
-
Is additional antivirus software required for the One-to-One Device?
It is not necessary to have additional antivirus software on One-to-One Devices. The technology coordinators are responsible for antivirus software and content filtering.
-
Does the district have the ability to track technology that may be lost or stolen?
Steps are being taken to allow us to track devices in these scenarios. However, students should not rely on this service to locate lost or stolen devices. We are also coordinating with law enforcement to prevent avenues for resale.
-
Will students be able to access inappropriate sites when using their One-to-One Device off campus?
Through use of the One-to-One Device Management Console, the Special School District Technology Department will have the same content filtering on the devices at home that students experience at school. The devices are not intended to stream non educational content that may violate copyright laws.
-
How can a student access a device if their One-to-One Device is being repaired?
The district has purchased a number of loaner devices for distribution through the Technology Office, depending on availability.
-
Will One-to-One Devices take the place of all textbooks?
Teachers will use a variety of resources to support their instruction. The technology enhanced classroom will support innovative practices and new resources for students to showcase their learning though textbooks will still play a role.
-
How are these web-based applications managed?
The SSD/North Technical Technology Department will maintain and manage all devices through our Google Apps for Education account. The Technology Department can pre-install as well as block specific web-applications from a centralized management console.
