Special School District of St. Louis County

Green-Samuels, Zavitsky Elected to SSD Board of Education

Two candidates were recently elected to fill open seats on the Special School District of St. Louis County’s Board of Education.

Those elected to the Board are:

  • Sheila Green-Samuels represents Subdistrict 1, which includes the Hazelwood and Jennings school districts. She currently works as curriculum coordinator in the Riverview Gardens School District and previously worked as a math teacher at SSD’s North Technical High School.
  • Joan Zavitsky represents Subdistrict 7, which includes the Ladue and Rockwood school districts. She has worked as a teacher and in a variety of administrative roles in education, including as an assistant principal, director and associate superintendent with SSD prior to retiring in 2012.

According to District policy, when a vacancy occurs on the Board of Education, the remaining members of the Board will select an individual to fill the vacant position until the next Board election. The vacancies were created when two Board members resigned for personal reasons. The Board elected Green-Samuels on May 9 and Zavitsky on May 25.

Green-Samuels and Zavitsky will serve on the Board until March 2018, when the SSD Governing Council will hold an election for the remaining two years of the terms. The Governing Council is comprised of one Board of Education representative from each of the 22 school districts in St. Louis County.
