SSD Board Names Superintendent

Don BohannonAt its Oct. 14, 2014, meeting, the SSD Board of Education approved naming Don Bohannon as superintendent effective immediately.

Bohannon is very familiar with SSD, having begun his career in education in the District in 1986. He will replace previous SSD Superintendent John C. Cary, who passed away last month after a short illness.

“We look forward to working together with Don to continue moving the District forward,” said Dan Cuneo, Ph.D., president of the SSD Board of Education.

Bohannon, 51, began his career in education in 1986 as an itinerant speech-language pathologist at SSD. In 1995, he became a member of the District’s administration and was appointed area coordinator. In 2000 he was promoted to region director for the District. Two years later he was again promoted to executive director of the District’s North region.

Most recently, Bohannon was appointed associate superintendent in July 2014, after having served as assistant superintendent for human resources since 2004. The Board named Bohannon associate superintendent with the intention that he serve in that role until Cary’s retirement in June 2015, and then move into the superintendent’s position.

“I am very proud and excited to begin this new chapter in my career with SSD,” said Bohannon. “I also feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work closely with Mr. Cary for nearly eight years. He was always willing to share his experiences, as well as his time, and I learned so much from him.”

Bohannon said his immediate priorities are to work closely with the Board of Education on its goals for the District, to continue furthering the spirit of collaboration between SSD and its partner districts in St. Louis County, and to meet District staff and other stakeholders.

Bohannon received a bachelor’s degree in 1985 and a master’s degree in 1986, both in speech-language pathology from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He earned a specialist degree in educational administration from Missouri Baptist University in 2009.

Bohannon is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association, Saint Louis Area Personnel and Placement Directors Association and American Association of School Personnel Administrators. He also is an active member of the Council for Exceptional Children.
