South Tech Student Advocates on Capitol Hill

Although Allie Roberts recently returned from a trip to Washington D.C., she hopes to have left something behind.

Roberts, a student at South Technical High School in Crestwood, attended the annual SkillsUSA Washington Leadership Training Conference Sept. 17-21.

While there, Roberts and her fellow Missouri SkillsUSA state officers made a visit to Capitol Hill. The group met with U.S. senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt and U.S. Rep. Todd Akin to advocate on behalf of career and technical education. The group urged the legislators to not make further cuts to the funding provided by the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act, and instead consider funding for career and technical education as an investment.

The Perkins Act provides federal funding for career and technical education programs in all 50 states.

Roberts spoke of the impact career and technical education has made on her as a student in the Laboratory and Pharmacy Technician Program at South Tech. She stressed how this program will better prepare her for the next phase of her education as she plans on entering the medical field upon graduation.

Along with leaving lasting impressions behind with her representatives, Roberts also brought home more than just souvenirs and photographs from the trip. Conference attendees attended workshops and seminars focused on developing advanced leadership, citizenship and employability skills.

“The conference was an enriching opportunity that allowed me to voice my opinion with the legislators who represent me in Congress,” Roberts said. “I was honored to represent my peers who are enrolled in career technical education programs.”
