South Tech students sweep up prizes at national weld-off

Students studying at South Technical High School earned top honors once again this year in the annual High School Senior Weld-Off at Tulsa Welding School. The event, held Feb. 25, 2012, included 247 competitors from around the United States. Judges from the American Welding Society determined top winners based on a variety of quality weld measures.

South Tech students in Adam Holt's welding class took first, second, third, fourth and sixth places in the competition.

First place overall was earned by Luke McClimens. His awards include a full-tuition scholarship to Tulsa Welding School (TWS) worth $14,358, a $200 Lincoln Electric auto darkening welding helmet, a $175 REVCO backpack and additional REVCO safety equipment.

Aaron Dunse placed second and earned a half-tuition scholarship to TWS, as well as a Lincoln helmet, REVCO safety equipment and an additional $500 scholarship.

Third-place winner Victor Hiegel, and fourth-place winner Jacob Turner each received quarter-tuition scholarships, additional $500 scholarships and helmets and safety equipment.

Jacob Oppelt earned sixth place and earned $1,000 in scholarships and a $750 Tulsa Welding School Gear Package.

“We are very proud of our students' accomplishments and congratulate them on their successes. As a provider of career and technical education in St. Louis County, we are thrilled to have been so well represented at a national competition,” said South Tech principal Dave Baker.
