Deaf/Hard of Hearing
The mission of the Countywide Program for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is to ensure full access to comprehensive educational programming that promotes the academic and social-emotional success of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
In order to achieve this, our program is staffed by a wide range of knowledgeable professionals with expertise in meeting the unique needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. These include:
- itinerant and classroom teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing;
- audiologists;
- speech-language pathologists;
- social workers;
- interpreters;
- captionists;
- and paraprofessionals.
In addition to academics, specific areas of need that may be addressed within an IEP include language, auditory skill development, self-advocacy, speech, and social-emotional development.
Students with hearing loss are served within a continuum of services and placements varying from itinerant level services within their home school to more extensive services within a site based program.
Site based programs offer students access to a larger population of peers and staff with whom they can communicate directly. They may also receive a higher level of services and supports than those available in their home school.
These site based programs are housed at the following locations:
- Ladue Early Childhood (Preschool students throughout the County ages 3-5)
- Parkway District (School-age students throughout St. Louis County)
