American Sign Language (ASL) Series

New this year, SSD's FACE (Family and Community Engagement) will be offering an immersive environment for learning American Sign Language (ASL)! Learn to communicate with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HoH) individuals with an introduction to fingerspelling and basic signs to use in the home, school, and community. Topics include family, school, food, and community signs. Deaf cultural norms will be discussed, which include introductions and daily interaction between the deaf and the hearing.

This course is intended for families and caregivers of students. This is not a professional learning opportunity for staff and no continuing education units will be awarded. 

Instructor Bio

Valerie Lancer is deaf and a teacher assistant at Bellerive Elementary. She is eager to share her ASL skills with those who thrive to communicate with the D/HoH community. Lancer is a busy mom of two hearing daughters. In her free time, she enjoys working on crafts and cheering on the St. Louis Blues.
