Safe Water at School

In 2022, the Missouri legislature passed the Get the Lead out of School Drinking Water Act (RSMo 160.077), which sets standards for lead concentrations in school drinking water. The law requires schools to conduct an inventory, sampling, remediation, and monitoring of all potable drinking water outlets that are used or may potentially be used for drinking, food preparation, cooking, or cleaning utensils.

The law requires school districts to communicate results directly with families. Results are also required to be posted on the District website and reported to the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). DHSS is currently developing reporting methods and procedures.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently has a lead drinking water standard limit of 15 parts per billion (ppb) of lead in water. However, Missouri law has established an action level of five parts per billion (5 ppb) for Missouri schools, which is equal to five micrograms per liter.

Testing

The SSD Facilities Department tested all of our buildings in July and early August. Out of 539 total water outlet districtwide, 37 water faucets and 1 drinking fountain came back with higher than 5ppb of lead after the initial test.

Test results by building are available below.

Remediation Plans

The SSD Facilities Department will install temporary handwashing-only signs on the sinks affected and is already in the process of replacing the drinking fountain with a new filtered type. We are evaluating the current state (age, and visual inspection) to determine if replacing components will resolve the high lead levels of each faucet or if a complete replacement of the whole faucet and supply water lines would be best. We are also looking at installing inline filters on the cold-water line in the first attempts to remediate the higher lead level. Once we have completed these repairs, we will perform follow-up testing to see if the repairs corrected the higher lead levels.
