About the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Department
-
The mission of the Countywide Program for Students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing is to ensure full access to comprehensive educational programming that promotes the academic and social-emotional success of students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing.
In order to achieve this, our program is staffed by a wide range of knowledgeable professionals with expertise in meeting the unique needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. These include:
- itinerant and classroom teachers of the Deaf and hard of hearing;
- audiologists;
- speech-language pathologists;
- social workers;
- interpreters;
- captionists;
- and paraprofessionals.
In addition to academics, specific areas of need that may be addressed within an IEP include language, auditory skill development, self-advocacy, speech, and social-emotional development.
Students with hearing loss are served within a continuum of services and placements varying from itinerant level services within their home school to more extensive services within a site based program.
Site based programs offer students access to a larger population of peers and staff with whom they can communicate directly. They may also receive a higher level of services and supports than those available in their home school.
These site based programs are housed at the following locations:
- Ladue Early Childhood (Preschool students throughout the County ages 3-5)
- Hazelwood District (School-age students living in North or Central St. Louis County)
- Parkway District (School-age students living in South or West St. Louis county)
We can assist in a variety of ways to help you meet the needs of students who are Deaf or hard-of hearing.
