Join Special School District as we celebrate Unity Day on October 18, 2023. The goal of Unity Day is to bring together youths, families, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community.

Special School District is committed to providing all students and staff with a safe, healthy, and welcoming learning environment. Additionally, SSD is committed to ensuring its students experience equitable educational opportunities free from bullying, harassment, discrimination, prejudice, and hate crimes. All community members are expected to treat each other with respect and appreciate the different and richly diverse personal qualities and skills of our school community.

Bullying means....
- intimidation, unwanted aggressive behavior, or harassment
- is repetitive or is substantially likely to be repeated
- causes a student to fear for his or her physical or personal safety or property
- substantially interferes with the educational performance, opportunities, or benefits of any student without expectation or substantially disrupts the orderly operation of the school
- is characterized by a real or perceived imbalance of physical or social power between the perpetrator and the target

Bullying may consist of...
- physical actions, including violence, theft, property damage, or gestures
- oral, electronic, or written communication, including name-calling, put-downs, extortion, or threats
- any threat of reprisal or retaliation for reporting such acts
Families in Partner Districts

Students and families in partner districts should follow the policies/guidance of their partner districts.
Families with concerns about bullying issues being addressed can contact the SSD area coordinator for their partner district, who will proceed to follow the chain of command.

Bullying Prevention and Intervention Investigation Form
This form is used by staff in SSD schools and sent home to families after an incident. If your student receives SSD services in a partner district, please review their resources.

This site provides resources on bullying and what educators, families, and the community can do to prevent it.

Courage 2 Report
The Missouri School Violence Hotline (SVH) began in October of 2001. In 2019, through the Missouri School Safety Initiative, the reporting mechanism moved to the Missouri Information Analysis Center for 24/7 operation and was named Courage2ReportMO. The goal is to make schools safer by helping school districts and law enforcement learn about school violence as soon as possible. Courage2ReportMO takes CONFIDENTIAL reports involving any public or private school in Missouri with students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

IRC Resources on Bullying
The Instructional Resource Center (IRC) services SSD families and staff all across St. Louis County. A wide variety of resources (like professional books, flashcards, educational games, software, and adaptive devices) are available for checkout. This link will compile a list of available items related to bullying.

National Bullying Prevention Center - PACER Center
This resource provides facts and stats about bullying, as well as having a section specific to students with disabilities, as well as sites for kids and teens.
