• Course Description

    Students will learn how to design, stage, and install commercial and residential electrical wiring for power and telecommunications systems. Skills taught include blueprint interpretation, layout, design, and programming equipment and an emphasis on logical thinking.

  • Prerequisites at the Time of Senior Year Enrollment

    Minimum of 11 core credits (2.5 must be English, 1 must be Algebra), completion of Construction Innovations or previous construction-related coursework, on track to graduate

    • Ranken Technical College and State Technical College - college credit opportunities exist through credit for prior learning or credit by assessment

    Students in this program learn through the use of a variety of industry grade tools and equipment and texts. Their real world labs also require uniforms and personal protective equipment.

    Uniform Requirements

    • Leather work boots that cover the ankle
    • Denim work pants or jeans, cotton shirt
    • Safety glasses and hardhats must be worn at all times in the lab space
  • Essential Skills Needed for Success

    Students learn the entry-level skills necessary to prepare for post-secondary education and the highly competitive world of work. Traditionally, successful students have mastered the processing and/or physical skills listed below prior to enrollment.

    Core Essential Skills

    • Have knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications Critical thinking - interpret information from blueprint(s), code book(s), instruction manual(s), diagnostic equipment to determine a course of action; Understand and use basic math.

    • Demonstrate familiarity with tools

    • Able to work in a standing position for a minimum of 2 hours and work on elevated surfaces

    • Able to crouch, kneel, twist, and turn repeatedly for a minimum of (2) hours

    • Able to lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds

    • Able to grasp, push, and pull, tools and objects with both hands

    • Able to tell the difference between black, blue, red, white, green, and copper colors

    • Tolerate a construction environment which includes high places, small spaces, extreme temperatures, dirty spaces, loud noises, and a variety of construction-related smells
