• Course Description

    This program introduces students to manufacturing skills including welding, precision machining, fabrication, and sheet metal. An overview of safety, equipment operation and problem solving will accompany an emphasis on applied math and measurement skills.

  • Prerequisites at the time of Senior Year Enrollment:

    Minimum of 11 core credits (2.5 must be English), on track to graduate

    • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) – 10 hour Construction Industry Certification
    *College credit and certification are not guaranteed. Their attainment is dependent on student performance in both the course and on external industry assessments. All certifications are through external agencies and the accommodations permitted will vary from assessment to assessment. Additionally, students must participate in the full two years of the program to be potentially eligible for all certifications listed.

    Students in this program learn through the use of a variety of industry grade tools and equipment and texts. Their real world labs also require uniforms and personal protective equipment.

    Although Ted has been working at SSD for nearly 30 years, he says he ended up here by "accident." Ted lost the use of his legs due to a degenerative back condition back in 1985, which ended his career as a machinist. After extensive rehabilitation and some valuable advice that he would be good working with kids, Ted started back to work as a substitute teacher. Soon after, Ted was hired as a full-time paraprofessional and began teaching about 8 years ago. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2004 and is currently working on his master’s degree.
