Jack Coulter

Jack Coulter, an eighth-grader at SSD’s Litzsinger School, has not allowed his medical limitations to get in the way of progressing and learning new communication strategies and methods.

When Jack began at Litzsinger, his only way to communicate was by blinking. A blink meant “yes” and no blink meant “no.” By the end of his first year in Litzsinger teacher Vicki Nelson’s classroom, he was participating in classroom routines using partner-assisted scanning. He was given three choices by his partner and he blinked to indicate his choice.

Recently, Jack began using a switch that senses small movements including eye blinks. He wears glasses with a sensor attached. The switch allows him to interact with computer programs, activate messages programmed on voice output devices, and turn kitchen appliances on and off.

Jack’s switch has provided him with another avenue to show how eager he is to learn, according to Nelson, who nominated Jack for the Rosemary Zander Award.

“Jack’s achievements are remarkable, especially when you realize that he is doing everything with a blink of an eye,” said Nelson.
