Gabriela Gonzalez-Snyder

Gabriela Gonzalez-Snyder achieved a complete transformation during her last two years at Parkway West High School.

Gabby, a senior who receives services from SSD for the deaf and hard of hearing, had difficulty accepting herself as an individual with hearing loss, according to SSD teacher Alexandra Fehlig.

“This not only affected her self-esteem, but also her motivation and work production,” said Fehlig.

“In order to achieve a complete turnaround in her grades, Gabby demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and outstanding leadership skills,” said Fehlig. “Her transformation is truly an inspirational success story.”

Gabby also became highly involved in a variety of schoolwide activities including sports, Special Olympics, and ISign Club. The ISign club allows students to learn American Sign Language while meeting new people and learning about the deaf culture.

“Gabby is one of the most compassionate and insightful students we have ever met,” said Fehlig. “She is able to look at the challenges she faces and understands how the choices she has made in the past have made her a stronger individual today.”
