Darius Matthews

Darius Matthews, a senior at Hazelwood West High School who receives services from SSD, has a determination that many students do not have.

As a sophomore, Darius began Project WALK, a prevention program that helps students who are at risk for dropping out of school.

He told his SSD teacher Denise Inman, who nominated Darius for the Rosemary Zander Award, that football was the most important thing in life to him. That’s when they were able to work together on a mission for not only getting on the football team, but also to change his educational path.

Darius worked hard and brought his grades up. He also practiced with the team even though he wasn’t eligible to play yet. His junior year he was a starting player on the football team.

“It is an honor to know a student who has worked hard to overcome challenges and has been a champion in the areas of sports and school,” said Inman. “Darius is a well-grounded young man who leads by example.”
