Michael Mitchell

Michael Mitchell, a senior who receives services from SSD at Parkway West High School and who studies automotive technology at SSD’s South Technical High School, has demonstrated exemplary dedication and outstanding drive and determination, according to South Tech automotive teacher Ed Rieman.

Rieman nominated Michael for the Rosemary Zander Award. Michael was born deaf. He has learned to use American Sign Language and Pidgin Sign English, a combination of American Sign Language and English. He can also read lips and recently got cochlear implants, which will allow him greater independence.

“Michael has exhibited a wonderful, positive attitude and worked hard to build upon successes,” said Rieman.

Michael has participated in both the Fred Saigh Leadership Program and SkillsUSA competitions.

“Mike is a leader by example,” said Rieman. “He is always helpful, outgoing and involved in the shop. He has come a long way and overcome many obstacles with his winning smile and stellar attitude. He will go far and excel in whatever he attempts.”
