Nathaniel Parker

Nathaniel Parker inspires others with his love for learning and perseverance through many of life’s challenges.

Nate, a junior who receives SSD services at Ritenour High School, was diagnosed with Duchenes Muscular Dystrophy. He lost his ability to walk at the age of 9. His body continues to weaken, but according to SSD area coordinator Michelle Quinlivan, who nominated Nate for the Rosemary Zander Award, Nate maintains a positive attitude and strives to learn all he can.

“Nate inspires others to persevere and demonstrates a love of learning no matter what his body allows him to do,” said Quinlivan. “In the spring of 2014, Nate lost his older brother to the same disease. Despite the loss, he returned to school with an even deeper zest for life and learning.”

When his body allows him, Nate participates in the Community-Based Vocational Skills program at Shop ‘n Save.

“Nate exemplifies citizenship and service as he works with peers, co-workers and even customers,” said Quinlivan.
