Working Together to Succeed

Tori Welker is outgoing, full of fun and has a strong desire to learn. Her family is thankful for the team of SSD staff that work to understand and meet her unique needs.

Tori, a fifth-grader at McKelvey Elementary School in the Parkway School District, has a diagnosis of autism and receives a variety of support services from SSD to help her be successful in school.

She has grown academically thanks to teachers who understand her learning style and challenge her while maintaining an encouraging atmosphere, said her mother, Peggy Welker. She is also succeeding socially among her peers thanks to the support of staff at McKelvey.

The SSD music therapist who works with Tori has incorporated goals that are part of Tori’s individualized education program – such as learning new math skills and behavior strategies -- into songs that help advance her learning.

Tori has also found success outside of the classroom. She is active in Variety Children’s Theatre and will appear in an upcoming production of “Annie.”

“Although I am not one to quickly give unwarranted praise, I am very thankful for the SSD team that works hard and succeeds at understanding my daughter and her complex learning needs,” Peggy Welker said.
