Service Learning at its Best

The students at Northview are very involved in several Service Learning projects in our community and beyond.  Below are  5 examples of projects that our classes are working on to make it a better world.

Shoes For Kenya – Gently used shoes are sold in Africa and proceeds from sales purchase water purification systems for needy areas.  Parents may send in gently used shoes that are in decent condition.

Food Pantry – Parents may send in canned goods and nonperishable items used to make up food baskets at Christmas and other times that a bit of assistance is required for needy families.

Operation Gratitude – Classes donate $15.00 each to pay for postage for one care package sent to a soldier in harm’s way (like Afghanistan).  Parents may send in money to assist with donations.  Also, if you have a family member who is serving in one of the branches of the military send in a picture of them and we will place the picture on our world map recognizing our active duty military.

St. Patrick’s Center Casserole Program – Parents may send in brownie mixes, canned icing, marshmallows, rice krispies, cake mixes for monthly bake sales that raise money to buy ingredients for casseroles.  These casseroles are prepared by the students monthly for St. Patrick’s Center for homeless people located downtown.

House of Hope – This is an organization which makes up care packages of toiletries and personal hygiene items for children in Haiti.  We are looking for these items as well as pennies which are collected in all classrooms throughout the school year.

Stray Rescue – Some classrooms collect plain Milkbone dog biscuits, dishwasher detergent, bleach, nylabones, 13 gallon and 50 gallon trash bags used at the Stray Rescue shelter.

Here’s a great way for you to be of service to your own school at Northview.  Room 106 collects, counts and submits Boxtops for Education on behalf of our school.  You can find these boxtops on many products such as cereal, soup and cake mixes to name just a few.  Last year, we collected 2,285 boxtops.  Since 2004, Northview has earned over $2000 to purchase educational items that make our school a better place for learning.  Remember to look for the Boxtop symbol on products you use, clip those symbols and turn  them in to Room 106!  We are collecting Campbell Soup Labels also!

Northview is involved in
Schnucks’ Community escrip program.  Ask for a card at your local Schnucks’ store.  Everytime you shop, a percentage of your purchase is donated back to Northview.  If interested in getting a card through school, please contact us at 989-7300.
