Northview Recognized for Character Education Programs

promising practice badgeJune 9, 2021 – Northview High School has received national recognition for its character education efforts, earning two Promising Practices honors from Character.org

The nonprofit organization Character.org is a national advocate and leader for character in schools and communities. Northview’s programs are among 170 Promising Practices recognized for 2021.

Northview’s equity team created the “Breakfast Club Coffee Talk: Fostering Relationships and Building Equitable Practices” program to build relationships among staff and create cultural awareness. Participants meet monthly during the school year to enjoy muffins and coffee provided by Northview’s Eagle Way Café and discuss issues related to equity and equitable practices to support an inclusive school community.

The “Marshall Mentoring” program supports eighth-grade students in transitioning from Ackerman School to Northview. Students from Northview serve as mentors to the Ackerman students, and participants meet in small groups to take part in character education activities and prepare for the high school experience. The program is in its third year.

“Both programs have benefitted the Northview community by fostering positive relationships and opening lines of communication to promote empathy, understanding, and connections between both staff and students,” said Northview Principal Brian O’Connor.

Initiatives that support character development play an integral role at Northview. Character.org designated Northview as a National School of Character in 2012 and the school was recertified with that designation in 2017.

“We are extremely proud to recognize the schools and organizations that have developed and implemented a Promising Practice,” said Dr. Arthur Schwartz, president of Character.org. “Each of these programs and initiatives has demonstrated significant impact and strongly align with the principles that help schools and organizations cultivate a culture of character.”

The 2021 Promising Practices recipients will be honored at Character.org’s National Forum to be held Oct. 20-22, 2021.
