April 26, 2023 - Police officers, firefighters, and EMTs were shown lots of love and support during Northview High School’s fourth annual First Responders Day. Students and staff kicked off the day of celebration with a parade. First responders drove around the school with flashing lights while students and staff held up thank you signs and shouted out words of appreciation. 

“This was my first First Responders Day and it was a lot of fun,” said Olivia Owens, 9th grader. “We provided first responders with cookies, candy, and water. Seeing Fredbird made the experience even better. I made a card that thanked police officers for keeping everybody safe, firefighters for saving homes, and EMTs for helping people.”

Northview is a 2022 National School of Character and because of the high level of distinction, Northview is expected to continue exemplifying the 11 Principles Framework for Schools throughout the academic year. One of the ways they accomplish this is by hosting First Responders Day. 

“I am the chair of the Character Ed Committee and First Responders Day is an event that everyone looks forward to,” said Carol Hoffman, coordinator of the event and teacher. “After the parade, we invite first responders to have lunch at the Eagle Way Cafe and they interact with students. They stay engaged and it builds stronger relationships with the community.” 

The day concluded with Northview students and first responders competing in a basketball game. Students and staff sat along the parameters of the gym and cheered on the teams. 

“We didn’t have a basketball game last year due to COVID, so this is the first time I am experiencing all that First Responders Day has to offer," said Mark Sharp, Northview assistant principal. "I love that the police officers are here intermingling with our students. Watching the students have fun and seeing the smiles on their faces is the best part.”
