Oct. 31, 2022 - Albert Mitchell, South Tech Design and Entrepreneurship Instructor, held a networking event titled Java Jam for his junior and senior classes. Students connected with business professionals from Richard Higby Design, Missouri AfterSchool Network, Black Girls Do STEM, American Income Life Insurance Company, and John Fahnestock, a professor at Maryville University. 

“I also invited the Electronics and Robotics program to participate in this event,” said Mitchell. “Students were responsible for meeting each guest, learning where they work, what they do, and requesting contact information.” 

Senior student Derrell Vanorder is an aspiring entrepreneur. He is still making a decision about the type of business he would like to start, but took full advantage of the opportunity to build contacts with people who are already living out his dream. 

“The reason I came today is because there are a lot of people who have business experience and are doing what they said they were going to do,” said Vanorder. “They have a business, they’re working on their business, working with people, and making those connections.” 

“I was really excited to learn more about networking,” said junior Tobias Maserant. “I myself am trying to become a business owner and the professionals today helped me understand the process.”

Along with networking, students recorded episode 2 of their podcast Future Gen with a few of the guests. 

“It’s tied to business,” said Mitchell. “It’s a chance for students to talk about their knowledge, expertise, and areas of passion.”

The podcast will be released sometime during the 2022-23 school year. South Tech is currently accepting applications for Fall 2023. Students are encouraged to apply early as courses often fill in January and waitlists are common. Learn more about all South Tech programs on their website.
