Jan. 12, 2022 - South Tech High School received a generous gift from Lou Fusz Automotive in early January. The car dealer donated two used cars to the Automotive Technology Program, a 2003 Chevrolet Impala and a 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle. Lou Fusz has donated four vehicles to North and South Tech over the past eight months and they have no plans to stop. Randy Harman, Lou Fusz talent acquisition manager, says that cars are these students' version of textbooks and he wants them to have the tools they need to get their education off to a good start. 

“We have worked for the last two or three years to develop a relationship with North and South Tech and it’s always a blast talking with the students,” said Harman. “We want students to know what opportunities they have moving forward in the automotive industry. We plan to donate more cars in the spring when things pick up.”

During the visit, Harman gave a brief overview of the company's career opportunities and internship program. Senior student Blake Gray is currently taking full advantage of their offers by working part time while also going to school. He’s in South Tech’s Automotive Collision Repair program.

“Right now I work in the detailing department at Lou Fusz and am working my way up to become an automotive technician,” said Gray. “I got my foot in the door by talking with a representative from Lou Fusz when they visited our program last year. Hopefully I’ll be able to become a technician before I start Ranken Technical School in the fall, so I’ll be one step ahead of everyone else.” 

Students will use the cars to learn about entry level maintenance and repair procedures like oil changes, service inspections, and stirring and suspension. 

“We’ll use all aspects of these vehicles,” said John Arndt, South Tech Automotive Technology instructor. “The Automotive Collision Repair program will even use them for detailing and cleaning. We get a lot of use out of vehicles when they are donated.”
