Rice started cooking at a young age by making cookies and cupcakes for schoolmates and his mother's co-workers – a project that he turned into JR's Gourmet, a catering business that he licensed at the age of 14.
He's since worked in the kitchens at several local country clubs, River City Casino and, most recently, Bait. When the COVID-19 pandemic began and many restaurants closed their doors, Rice revisited his JR's Gourmet project by catering small events and private dinners.
Rice also founded Feeding the Frontline STL, a crowd-funded service project that has provided meals to healthcare workers in the St. Louis area during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, Rice plans to launch a new branch of JR's Gourmet to provide elevated desserts to restaurants across St. Louis.
