SSD Transportation Department Receives Total Fleet Excellence Award

Transportation Department Receive Total Fleet Excellence AwardJuly 29, 2021 - Special School District’s Transportation Department has been awarded the Exemplary School Bus Maintenance Award, for the tenth year running. Provided by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), the award recognizes school districts and/or contractors who have 90% or more of their buses pass the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s spring school bus inspection on the first attempt. 

These results mean the fleet has earned the Total Fleet Excellence award, obtaining an approval rating of over 90% with no buses placed out of service. SSD buses will display the Total Fleet Excellence sticker in the window of all buses.

“We appreciate what the Missouri Highway Patrol does for the school transportation industry in auditing our work to make sure we are continuing to provide the safest mode of transportation for our students,” said Kenny Mulder, director of transportation. “Our team takes pride in making sure we are providing safe buses to transport our students back and forth every day.” 


A total of 24 different areas are inspected during the process, covering the entire bus bumper to bumper. Transportation conducts on-going school bus inspections throughout the year. Buses are routinely inspected every 4,000 miles or 45 days. All shops are state-certified inspection sites and handle inspections 60 days prior to the first day of school. Inspection teams are sent between February and April to perform state inspections, as well as conducting unannounced spot inspections throughout the school year.
