Dec. 19, 2022 - With the help of teachers, students, administrators, and volunteers, Ackerman School’s gym was transformed into a holiday shopping center for its annual Holiday Shopping event. 

“We’ve got about 700 to 800 items,” said Trish Wright, Ackerman occupational therapist and chair of the Holiday Shop committee. “The event teaches students about giving and also allows them to buy holiday gifts for their families.”

Many students may not have the means to purchase presents for the holiday season without the school's support, which is why the event is held. For only 50 cents an item, students can purchase up to four gifts for their loved ones. Jewelry, toys, home decor, and beauty products are only a few of the categories that students can choose from. 

“If they do not have money to spend, the school will sponsor that student to shop,” said Wright. 

All of the items are donated by Ackerman staff, families, and generous community members. The SSD District Leadership Team (DLT) wraps items along with members of Concordia United Church of Christ, Diamond Diva, and the McClurer North High School Cheer team. 

“Me being a teacher at Ackerman and knowing that we needed volunteers for the event, I thought it would be good for our cheerleaders to mingle with the students and help wherever needed,” said Asaki Carr, Ackerman teacher and McClurer North assistant cheer coach. “This is our first year doing it and we hope to help out every year.”

4th grade student Isaiah Barner bought gifts for his sister, brothers, and mom. He says it’s the least he could do.

“I wanted to go shopping to give my family what they deserve,” said Barner. “I got my sister a Barbie doll, my brothers a remote control robot, baseball hat and gloves, and my mom a candle.”

Any left over items are sold to staff for a dollar each. The money will be used to replenish the shop for next year's event.
