Litzsinger Celebrates Black History Through Books

Leader Reader reads a book to Litzsinger students.

March 4, 2024 - Over 30 administrators and staff from across the District participated in Litzsinger School’s annual Black History Month Leader Reader Event for the second year. Guests, also known as leader readers, read one to four books related to Black History to a classroom of students. Students shared what they had learned throughout Black History Month and had the opportunity to ask questions about their classroom-featured book.

“It meant something to us that district leaders would take time out of their busy schedules to read and talk to our students about Black History, helping us to highlight its importance in American History,” said Dr. Julie Moorman, Litzsinger assistant principal.

Each reader spent approximately 25 minutes in two separate classrooms. They had over 50 books to choose from, all selected by Carolyn Eagle, Litzinger’s librarian. Some of the books read include “The Story of Ruby Bridges,” “Undefeated,” and “Hidden Figures.” Eagle says she chooses the perfect book based on how well it catches the students' attention, the strength of its message, and the quality of its pictures. 

“We work very closely with the St. Louis County Library, said Eagle. “If there is a book I would like to include at the event, but we don’t have it, we borrow it from the library. If the students end up really liking it, along with the teachers and leader readers, we buy it for our library.”

Jessica Spencer, effective practice specialist, read the books “Let the Children March” and “The Color of Us.” During her sessions, she loved how the students engaged and laughed at funny passages from the stories.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to get into the classrooms and for students to see different District leaders. It also allows them to reflect on Black History Month,” she added. “For my second book, the author used food to help illustrate that the color brown comes in many shades. That made my students giggle. I was happy to participate!” 

After reading, leader readers could walk through their classroom's Black History Gallery Walk Presentation. The galleries featured historical moments in U.S. history and highlighted famous Black leaders.
