May 2, 2022 - Northview students took time out of their day to say thank you to first responders at the annual First Responders Day. On April 28, Florissant police officers, firefighters, and paramedics were greeted by hundreds of students who cheered and waved colorful banners that read, “Thank you for all you do!” and “Keep up the good work.” Students wrapped around the entire building and handed out bottled water, goodie bags, thank you cards, and cookies that were made by Eagle Way Cafe. 

“Our students sometimes require the support of our first responders and we like to show our appreciation and gratitude for all they do to help support our students, as well as the community at large,” said Assistant Principal Mark Sharp. 

The event acknowledges the sacrifices made by first responders and looks to build positive relationships between students and law enforcement. But it’s also about school unity. The entire school community comes together for a common cause. Principle Brian O’Connor says he loves seeing the positive relationships that are formed. 

“Typically students in our social emotional behavior department don’t intermingle as much with students in the autism and intellectual disability departments,” said Sharp. “It’s great to see everyone participate together and have fun.”

“I love it because the whole school can participate,” said Dianne Witte, paraprofessional and organizer of the event. “We have a variety of disabilities here and there is something for everyone. Every student, no matter what their disability is, participates.”

Prior to the pandemic, Eagle Way Cafe student workers would cook lunch for the first responders, which was followed by a friendly game of basketball. Staff hope to incorporate those activities next year.
