Northview High School 2022 Champion for Character

May 10, 2022 - Northview High School hasNorthview High School 2022 Champion for Character been recognized as a 2022 Champion for Character. The school earned the award for its commitment to service learning and a celebration took place on April 28 at a Cardinals baseball game at Busch Stadium. The school received 250 game day tickets, a banner to commemorate its recognition, and were honored on the field during the pre-game ceremony.

“Northview has worked to develop a strong character in our students through participation in numerous service learning projects such as our St. Patrick’s Casserole program, our backpack program, and our Care Closet,” said Northview Principal Brian O’Connor. “It’s a great honor to be recognized for our staff and students' hard work and dedication to our community.”

Northview student Dailon Costello threw the first pitch. Principal Brian O’Connor and Assistant Principal Mark Sharp selected Costello because of his love for sports. He says it was a dream come true.

“It was exciting and a moment I will never forget,” said Costello. “My favorite sports are basketball, hockey, baseball, and football. They are fun and make me happy.”

Champions for Character is presented by Character Plus, an organization that encourages schools to participate in long-term and school-wide service learning projects. Only three schools in the metro area are given the award. Projects must be implemented into the school's curriculum and include student voices. O’Connor says that service learning at Northview is more than just completing a project, it’s about giving back to the community.

“It is about reflection and finding yourself in the service of others,” said O’Connor. “Providing opportunities for service learning assists individuals in developing empathy, which in turn creates a caring community and an atmosphere where everyone encourages each other to thrive.”
