Ackerman Students Purchase Gifts for Loved Ones

Ackerman students holds holiday gifts for his family.

December 20, 2023 - With over 1,000 items to choose from, Ackerman School was turned into a mini boutique for the annual Holiday Shopping event. It’s an opportunity for students to purchase gifts for family members. Students selected from a variety of children’s toys, home items, and men's and women's merchandise.

“We want the students to come and feel like they are having a real holiday shopping experience,” said Nancy Richey, school counselor. “That’s why we spend days packaging the gifts and organizing the space to make it look like a real store. I love to see the look on the students' faces of pure enjoyment when they peruse through all the tables and find something they want to buy.”

All items are one dollar, but no one is turned down for being unable to pay. Special School District’s administrators wrapped gifts along with members of local churches, and family volunteers. The functional job skills team sold hot chocolate and the Northview choir sang holiday songs. Students Jalah Howell and Alexis Moore are members of Diamond Divas, a girl group that promotes friendship and social skills, and jumped in on the opportunity to serve.

“I like helping people and it looked like fun,” said Howell.

“We are helping people shop and find items they need,” said Moore. “I shopped earlier and bought a bath and body kit for my sister and a hat for my twin brother.”

“I got my brother a Spiderman mask, my little sister a doll, and my mama some perfume,” added Howell.”

Any money earned is used to purchase supplies or gifts for next year. Richey says it’s a team effort.

“The teachers and staff who are involved shop all year round. It really brings the community together and shows the heart and spirit of Ackerman,” says Richey. “We truly care about our students and want them to look back and remember how fun it was. We want them to say that they had a great time shopping for their siblings and parents. That’s what makes it wonderful and my favorite event of the year.”
