Brenda Saye Receives Teacher of the Month Award

Brenda Saye poses with her enlarged check for $250.00

March 26, 2024 - Brenda Saye, Ackerman teacher, has been recognized as March Teacher of the Month by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Saye was nominated by Melissa Lohrmann, Ackerman substitute teacher and SSD retiree. Lohrmann nominated Saye for successfully launching a new job training program at Ackerman. Although Saye is nearing retirement, Lohramann believes her commitment to start a program shows her willingness to go above and beyond for her students.

“She is an exceptional teacher,” said Lohrmann. “When she told me that she wanted to start an entirely new program, I was shocked because she is 2-3 years from retirement. But that’s how Brenda is. When she sees a need, she takes action and is good at what she does.”

Saye kickstarted the job training program last year. The idea stemmed from her wanting to prepare students for life outside school.

“Lisa Leonard-Sneed, Ackerman principal, and I put our heads together to produce a plan,” said Saye. “I worked diligently over the summer to create jobs that the students could do. Their various responsibilities include delivering food bags filled with fruits and vegetables, cleaning, recycling, making coffee, tea, lemonade, and desserts for the coffee cart, and working the Fine Dining Day event. We have received a lot of compliments on the student’s performance.”

As part of Saye’s award, she received a $250 gift card, enlarged check, and certificate, and will be featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and on on Sunday, March 31.

“Congratulations, Brenda!,” said Leonard-Sneed. “You are an amazing teacher who always puts your students first. Thank you for your leadership and for constructing and implementing the Jobs Skills Program at Ackerman. This award is much deserved. Thank you for all you do.”
