Students Learn About Classmates at Fashion Show

A student walks down the runway and waves at the audience with his teacher.

April 22, 2024 - Ackerman students strutted down the runway, showing off their safari-themed fashion during the school’s Fashion Show. The event is held annually to spotlight the diverse abilities of students. This year, a short synopsis of every participant's interests and hobbies was read out loud as they came down the runway, allowing the audience to get to know everyone on a personal level.

“Some of our students can’t always vocalize themselves, so the Fashion Show gives us the opportunity to share what their favorite activities are, what they like to wear, and what they choose to do in their spare time,” said Melissa Gardner, teacher’s assistant and event narrator.

To go along with the theme, students and staff were given animal print hats and fans. Students were also responsible for making some of the safari-themed decorations, such as trees, branches, and animals made out of construction paper. Jordan Donn, 8th-grade, says having his friend with him, Jayli, made it an even better experience.

“I love watching the students make an entrance,” adds Garnder. “They get to show off, strut their stuff, and just be themselves. They have a lot of fun with it.”

Ackerman’s remaining events of the school year include Family Wellness Day on May 3, graduation on May 16, and the Family Picnic on May 23.
