October: Embracing Unity Day - Building Stronger, Kinder Communities
Posted by Chantal Chandler on 10/4/2023
October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. This month serves as a crucial reminder of our work to create safe, inclusive environments for our students, and we are proud to participate in Unity Day on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023. This special recognition day calls upon us to stand together against bullying and promote unity, kindness, and compassion within our school communities.
Unity Day is an opportunity for us to come together and emphasize our commitment to eradicating bullying and fostering a culture of respect and inclusion. On Oct. 18, we encourage everyone to wear orange as a symbol of solidarity against bullying. This small act not only raises awareness but also sends a powerful message that we stand united against all forms of bullying. It's a visible representation of our shared dedication to creating a safe and welcoming environment for every student.
SSD is also hosting a Lunch & Learn session with The Megan Meier Foundation for families about bullying and cyberbullying on Oct. 5, 2023, at 11:30 AM. The session will be recorded and accessible following the live meeting. To engage SSD students in Unity Day, the District is holding a Unity Day: “Express Yourself” art contest. Students are invited to create and submit artwork aligned to the theme of “Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion.” Entries are due Oct. 13 and the winner will be recognized at an upcoming SSD Board of Education meeting.
As education providers, we have committed significant resources and energy to ending bullying. We teach students these lessons and seek restorative practices, asking them to be better. Let's make this Unity Day a memorable one, not just by donning orange attire but by engaging in the meaningful conversations about the importance of kindness, empathy, and respect in our daily lives - just as we ask our students to do. Together, we can reinforce our commitment to preventing bullying, supporting victims, and ultimately building stronger, kinder communities. As we observe National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, let's remember that unity is our greatest strength in the fight against bullying.
Want to do something to help prevent bullying? Show your support and take the pledge to be together against bullying! Take the pledge and make a commitment to show that we are together against bullying, and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
