Jenna Kovarik, SSD’s 2026 Teacher of the Year, leads an essential skills classroom built around independence and real-world learning. In her room, students are active participants in their day. Through Bear Bites, the student-run snack cart she developed and launched, they take orders, count money, track inventory, and interact with staff and peers. What looks simple on the surface is carefully structured instruction in communication, problem solving, and responsibility. She has also shifted daily lessons to individualized binders and hands-on stations so every student is writing, responding, and engaged rather than watching from the sidelines.

Jenna plans with intention. She uses a multi-level curriculum, AAC devices, visual supports, and clear learning targets to ensure each student can access instruction in a meaningful way. Her classroom centers on four priorities: independence, communication, advocacy, and academics. She tracks growth using a functional skills rubric and adjusts instruction based on the data. Whether students are preparing for MAP A, building foundational literacy, or training for Special Olympics, expectations remain high, and supports are practical and consistent.

Her leadership reaches beyond her classroom walls. Jenna collaborates closely with therapists, paraprofessionals, and families to keep communication clear and goals aligned. She founded the Food Explorers Club to help students with sensory sensitivities explore nutrition in a safe, supportive environment. She mentors colleagues, serves on building committees, coaches Special Olympics, and recently earned National Board Certification. Her classroom families receive regular updates, and community partnerships help sustain classroom initiatives.
