Scholarships

The Bonhomme Lions Club anticipates offering four scholarships in the amount of $1,250 each in 2026, depending on the results of their annual fundraising efforts. The Lions are especially interested in students who have demonstrated strong character, high academic achievement, and participation in community service.

Two James E. Westbury Memorial SSD Board of Education Scholarships scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 each. They are sponsored by Attorneys James and Robert Thomeczek of Mickes O'Toole Law and the SSD Board of Education. The scholarship is named for a former SSD Board of Education director and education professional in the St. Louis region. The current Board of Education will select the students who will receive this scholarship and will base their decision in part on the students' goals and their plans to achieve them.

This single scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $3,000. It is sponsored by the family of Allison Haake, an SSD paraprofessional who was studying to be a teacher before she passed away in 2007. The Haake family will consider all student applicants, but would like to know if they have any experience working with children or peers (camps, tutoring, childcare, etc.).

The John Cary Scholarship is administered by the Special Education Foundation (SEF). These scholarships are awarded to graduating students who have received services from the Special School District of St. Louis County (special education and/or technical education) and plan to attend a four-year college or university. The selected students will reflect the characteristics most admired by John Cary — resiliency, courage and determination. The scholarship committee looks for evidence of future success by considering academics, leadership and community volunteer activities, and success in athletics and/or the arts. Well-rounded individuals, particularly those with exceptional achievement in a particular area, are likely to be successful applicants. Overcoming obstacles carries weight in the screening process. Financial need and teacher recommendations are also considered. The funds may be used for tuition only.
